In some situations, a traditional dental filling may not be the best option for restoration. If a tooth has suffered a sizeable amount of decay, restoration with a filling may weaken the tooth more. Instead, we may suggest going with porcelain inlays or onlays. Crafted from high-quality porcelain, inlays and onlays can actually strengthen the structural integrity of the tooth. Once the decayed area is removed, depending on the area needing to be restored, we’ll create an inlay or onlay. Inlays sit along the interior biting surface, while onlays extend over the cusps (top edges) to the exterior of the tooth. While a traditional filling may require additional support from a dental crown, inlay and onlay restorations are strong enough on their own. These restorations are durable and require no removal of healthy enamel. These restorations can also be used to replace old or failed fillings. If your teeth have succumbed to moderate or severe decay, ask us about porcelain inlay or onlay restorations.
